King of Culture Boardgame

The King of Culture Boardgame is a culmination activity for a heritage unit. During the unit, our classroom learns about each others cultures and countries of origin. Through a variety of methods (including lecture, research, and student presentations) students are exposed to many facts about their classmates' heritages. Near the end of the unit, students are given the opportunity to showcase their knowledge with a fun boardgame.

Before the game can be played, students need to complete two tasks. First, students must fill out several sheets of fact cards for each different country represented in the classroom. To download a printable version of these fact cards, click here. Each sheet contains ten questions. Students simply write the name of the country on the front in markers and lightly write the answer on the back in pencil. The amount of countries represented in the class determines how many cards will be used to play the game. We generally have between 120-200 cards. The second thing students must do is bring in a gamepiece that shows their culture. Things that work well are coins, jewelery, or small trinkets. If a student doesn't seem to have anything, they can always draw a small flag or logo on a piece of paper.

The only other things needed to play the game are dice and the gameboard. You can download a high resolution image of the gameboard by clicking here.

The King of Culture Rules:

To become the King of Culture, you must be the first player to land on the King square of the boardgame and answer a country card question correctly. This game is recommended for 2-4 players. To start the game, roll dice to see who will go first. The high roller goes first, the next highest roller second, etc. After the first player rolls the dice, they move their gamepiece the number of spaces rolled. They are then asked a question. If they answer correctly, they may roll again. Game play goes to the next player when a player answers incorrectly or lands on a "Lose a Turn" or "Go Back to Start" square. Players follow the path of the squares until they reach the "King" square. To land on the "King" square, you must have an exact roll. If you don't roll exactly, play moves on to the next player. The first player to land exactly on the "King" square and answer a country card question correctly is the "King of Culture."
