Word of the Day

Vocabulary is an essential component of a Language Arts classroom. Learning new words helps students communicate, write, and comprehend the world around them. Each day in our classroom, students are engaged in an activity entitled "Word of the Day." Upon entering the room for their first period with me, students are to look for the new word of the day written on the chalkboard. Afterr they find the word, students must look it up in a dictionary. Once found, students copy down the definition, its part of speech, use the word in a sentence, and draw a picture to help them remember the words meaning. At the end of each week, words are graded and students are required to use the 5 words learned during that week in a short story.
